The International Commission on Illumination - also known as the CIE from its French title, the Commission Internationale de l'Éclairage - is devoted to worldwide cooperation and the exchange of information on all matters relating to the science and art of light and lighting, colour and vision, photobiology and image technology.
CIE is an independent, non-profit organization that serves member countries on a voluntary basis. Since its inception in 1913, the CIE has become a professional organization and has been accepted as representing the best authority on the subject and as such is recognized by ISO as an international standardization body.
Attending conferences to learn about and discuss the latest research is an essential component of CIE activity. Seventeen members of CIE-UK received support to attend the conference, a value of approximately £20,000. In this article, Nigel Parry describes the discussions he attended at the 30th Session of the CIE, Slovenia, September 2023. This article was originally published in the Lighting Journal, October 2023, reposted here with permission.
Every year the CIE make one document available for free to members of CIE national illuminating committees. In 2022 this document is CIE 234:2019 A guide to urban masterplanning
